The true origin of the Wyandotte is unknown, however, Dark Brahmas and Spangled Hamburgs were probably used in the development of the original Silver Laced variety. Partridge Wyandottes originated from crosses involving Golden laced Wyandottes, Partridge Cochins and Winnebagos. Partridge Wyandotte chicks are light brown with the head and body being much darker. They have rose combs and clean, brown and yellow legs and feet. Adult males have red heads and backs and greenish black hackle and saddle feathers that are laced with red. The wing fronts are black, wing bows red and coverts greenish black, forming a distinct wing bar when folded. The breast body and main tail feathers are black. Adult females have reddish bay heads. The plumage of the back, breast and body is reddish bay with black penciling.
