Brahmas originated in India from a cross between Malays and Cochins and were originally known as Chittagongs, Gray Shanghais and Brahma Pootras. Dark Brahmas have brown backs and heads with light gray wing tips and chest. They have pea combs and feathered feet and legs. Adult males have a silvery white head and hackles that are greenish black laced with white. Their tail is black, sickles greenish black and coverts greenish black with white lacing. The feathers on their legs, feet, body, wing bows and breast are black. Adult females have a silvery gray head. Their body, breast, back, shank and toe feathers are steel gray with black penciling, and the hackle feathers are black with white lacing. They are considered a dual-purpose bird that lays brown eggs, but they are mainly kept for their unique appearance.
